The sun is rising earlier and the evenings are drawing out, giving us what feels like a longer day to fit our busy lives in to and with that feeling of extra time those who know how important it is to fit some exercise in start thinking of how and when.
Even with a longer day people who exercise still want to utilise their time efficiently and get the most out of their exercise sessions. Knowing the best time to work out for fitness and possible weight loss can help you get faster results in less time. This is not just for those who are athletic but also for the average person who wants to use exercise to lose pounds or get in better shape.
But is the time you choose for a workout crucial in determining its effectiveness?
There are many varied studies where some scientists claim that exercising first thing in the morning before breakfast will lead to your body burning more fat, others who state that afternoon exercise sessions will lead to better performance and increased strength and power and others who argue that the body’s metabolism is best suited to evening or night-time activity.
Your body has a circadian rhythm that can influence body functions such as blood pressure, body temperature, hormone levels and heart rate which all play a role in your body’s readiness for exercise. This determines whether you're a night owl or an early bird, and there's not much you can do to alter it.
However you don't have to be an expert on circadian rhythms to determine the best time to exercise.
Work out in the morning for a few weeks, then try noon, then early evening. Which do you enjoy most and which makes you feel best afterward?
At Coastside Fitness we’re open from 7:30am to 9:00pm most days which should hopefully give you some time to come in and exercise and starting out can be as simple as changing the route you come home from work so that you drive near your gym.
Once you find a time that works for you best then try and schedule it for the same time each day and make it part of your routine as people who are just starting out and who exercise randomly are more likely to give up.
Keeping a bag of exercise gear in your car or at work will also help as the one aspect that all experts agree on is to choose a time of day you can stick with, so that exercise becomes a habit leading to a healthier and more active lifestyle.
